This program aims to give undergraduates an opportunity to do cutting-edge research in astrophysics, and in particle and nuclear physics. According to Alexey Petrov, professor of physics in Wayne State’s College of Liberal of Arts, principal investigator and program director of the grant, the student participants will work with faculty mentors on research projects at WSU or at a premier national lab, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, IL. “Students will participate in weekly seminars, workshops and field trips,” said Petrov. “They are given the opportunity to experience a real-life research environment and contribute to ongoing research projects led by the faculty in Wayne State’s Department of Physics and Astronomy.” This NSF-funded program was renewed last year and is in its 14th year at WSU. “The REU program in Wayne State’s Department of Physics and Astronomy is a great example of how a research experience can provide undergraduate students with higher quality, hands-on and meaningful educational experiences that broaden their knowledge base,” said Joseph Dunbar, associate vice president for research at Wayne State.

Michigan’s University Research Corridor schools — Michigan, Michigan State and Wayne State universities — are cranking out entrepreneurs at twice the national rate of college graduates. A new study showing the URC schools’ success at creating entrepreneurs was released Thursday at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Mackinac Policy Conference. The report, titled “Embracing Entrepreneurship,” showed that graduates of the three universities have started or acquired businesses at double the national average rate among college graduates since 1996. And they’re good at running those businesses. The study showed URC alumni were 1.5 times as successful as the average U.S. business owner at keeping those start-ups and acquisitions alive in the past five years. “The three URC universities see themselves as the leading engine for innovation in Michigan and the Great Lakes region, with a focus on increasing economic prosperity and connecting Michigan to the world. Our coordinated efforts should encourage even more entrepreneurs and start-ups in the future,” says Wayne State University President Allan Gilmour. Debbie Dingell, chair of the Wayne State University Board of Governors, said: “What’s clear is that we in Michigan have young people with ideas, and we’re giving them a university system that’s giving them the tools that they need to actually go out and start that business.” In a Lansing State Journal editorial, the results of the report are lauded: “In the 21st Century economy, where entrepreneurialism is considered an essential ingredient to economic success, the prowess of the alumni of URC-affiliated universities must not be under estimated.”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 31, 2013

Eight Small Companies Awarded Grants
For Research Partnerships with Michigan Universities

Michigan Corporate Relations Network Announces Latest Funding Round

LANSING, Mich. –The Michigan Corporate Relations Network (MCRN) today announced eight Small Company Innovation Program (SCIP) grant awards that will enable research partnerships between small Michigan businesses and MCRN universities.

SCIP provides one-to-one matching funds to support collaborative research projects between small and mid-sized Michigan-based companies and MCRN universities. By awarding matching funds, SCIP helps businesses stretch their budgets for critical, early-stage developments that will move them closer to commercialization. As leaders in conducting more than $1.8 billion of research (99 percent of the academic research done in Michigan in 2009), MCRN universities have a wealth of resources to offer Michigan businesses. SCIP is specifically designed to provide smaller companies an opportunity to access resources that may not otherwise be affordable.

Through a competitive process, the following projects were selected for funding as part of the latest round of SCIP grant awards:

Advanced Technologies of Michigan Inc. and the University of Michigan-Dearborn

Tetra Discovery Partners LLC and Western Michigan University

SCIP’s next application deadline is September 27, 2013. For more information on SCIP and other MCRN programs, visit http://www.michigancrn.org.

The Michigan Corporate Relations Network is a collaboration among six public universities working to connect businesses with university resources that will help to drive innovation and commercialization. MCRN consists of Wayne State University, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Michigan Technological University, University of Michigan-Dearborn, Western Michigan University, and the University Research Corridor. MCRN is supported by funding from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

Tucked inside an incubator lab, a startup company has developed technology aimed at helping researchers discover better treatments for cancer, and eventually offering patients a less-invasive alternative to a biopsy.

The device, created by DeNovo Sciences Inc., uses blood drawn from a patient to identify rare blood cells with information about the cancer.

The technology has since found its way into a clinical setting at Karmanos Cancer Institute. There, a Wayne State University researcher has started experiments using the device with blood from cancer patients to help DeNovo improve the product.

The business-research collaboration was made possible through a grant awarded by Michigan Corporate Relations Network, an alliance of six of the state’s 15 public universities. The network’s goal is to bolster academia’s role in the economy by making it easier for small Michigan businesses to partner with public research universities. The network includes Wayne State University, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and Dearborn, Michigan State University, Western Michigan University and Michigan Technological University. Together, the six universities represent a wide geographic area and more than $1.8 billion in research expenditures, or about 98 percent of academic research in the state.

The university’s business laboratory, which is funded out of New York City by The Blackstone Group’s Blackstone Charitable Foundation, launched its annual Warrior Fund competition on Feb. 5, announcing it would give awards of up to $5,000 to Wayne State student-run enterprises ready for venture capital. On March 22, it gave $17,000 to four contestants: $5,000 each to SIB Medical, Girls-With-Guts, and AskSupportNow, and $2,000 to Signal Techtronics.

A judging panel of greater-Detroit business leaders heard ten-minute pitches from the four contestants before determining they had actionable business plans for scalable products or services. After each pitch, the panel “grilled” the contestants to identify weakness in the proposed venture, then provided constructive feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of the students’ pitches.

Wayne State University received notice of a $820,398 grant from the New Economy Initiative for Southeast Michigan (NEI) that will continue to support the Technology Commercialization Office’s efforts to expand and improve the university’s entrepreneurial culture and technology commercialization results. With this support from NEI, WSU will continue to expand the activities of its Technology Development Incubator to support the validation of early-stage technologies with significant commercial potential, increase licensing staff, and enhance marketing tools to create awareness of the availability of WSU intellectual property assets to industry and the venture capital community. “A key focus for the New Economy Initiative is to increase tech transfer and commercialization throughout the region, and Wayne State is central to those efforts,” said David O. Egner, executive director of the New Economy Initiative. “As a driver of innovation and new ideas ––from the Colleges of Engineering and Medicine to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences –– Wayne State continues to produce intellectual property that ultimately leads to company and job creation. We’re thrilled to support the university’s efforts to increase commercial outputs and entrepreneurial activity as a whole, while helping build an innovation corridor right here in Detroit that benefits the entire region.”
